Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain

If you ask me what my all time favorite movie is... I would surely say Amelie. Ever since I saw the movie in the theater I was carried away to some magical cross processed dream. I instantly fell in love with Amelie's innocent and naive character played by the beautiful Audrey Tautou. Throughout the movie Amelie helps others find happiness and also finds love along the way. The cast is full of amazing supporting characters including the very handsome Mathieu Kassovitz who plays Amelie's love interest Nino Quincampoix. Here's some interesting  little known facts... Director  Jean-Pierre Jeunet always casts Dominique Pinon in all his movies. He likes to cast actors with unusual facial features, often uses wide camera angles and his main characters are often orphans or have lost their parents. The "crossed processed" feel and look is due to extensive use of color grading in order to give his movies the desired (often fantastic) ambiance. The closing credits of his movies show images of every actor from the movie.

I have searched high and low and found a bunch of glorious images and artwork and links to look at. Pre pare yourself for what you are about to see. This is a long post, but it's mostly visual.. so you'll be okay.

We pass the time of day to forget how time passes.

Paper Heart

On September 3rd 1973, at 6:28pm and 32 seconds, a bluebottle fly capable of 14,670 wing beats a minute landed on Rue St Vincent, Montmartre. At the same moment, on a restaurant terrace nearby, the wind magically made two glasses dance unseen on a tablecloth. Meanwhile, in a 5th-floor flat, 28 Avenue Trudaine, Paris 9, returning from his best friend's funeral, Eugène Colère erased his name from his address book. At the same moment, a sperm with one X chromosome, belonging to Raphaël Poulain, made a dash for an egg in his wife Amandine. Nine months later, Amélie Poulain was born.

September 28th, 1997. It is exactly 11am. At the funfair, near the ghost train, the marshmallow twister is twisting. Meanwhile, on a bench in Villette Square, Félix Lerbier learns there are more links in his brain than atoms in the universe. Meanwhile, at the Sacré Coeur, the nuns are practising their backhand. The temperature is 24°C, humidity 70%, atmospheric pressure 990 millibars.

With a prompter in every cellar window whispering comebacks, shy people would have the last laugh.

Amelie has one friend, Blubber. Alas the home environment has made Blubber suicidal.

Trip to The Dallas Aquarium

So a few weekends ago The Mister and I took a weekend a trip to Dallas to visit some college friends.
We originally had to make the trip to pick up a HVAC system for our Studio that Matt has been finishing up in our backyard.... which by the way is AWESOME! That's a whole other blog post though. So after we found out that we would have to make an unexpected trip to pick up the HVAC system we called up our friends and decided to make a weekend out of it! We were all so excited because we have never seen their place before. Our buddies Laura and Aaron have two young daughters Miriam and Julia that are just adorable. We decided to bring Lucy to play with their two huge Great Pyrenees. It was really funny to watch them interact together. Lucy is small but she pretty much ran the roost.

The first night we hung out and drank some Milk Stout brewed by left hand brewing company that was pretty tasty.

We also watched "Silver Linings Playbook" which made me quite nervous.... I'm not going to spoil it for anyone so don't worry. Basically the synopsis goes like this:
After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano (played by Bradley Cooper) moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany (played by Jennifer Lawrence), a mysterious girl with problems of her own.
Now I LOVE Jennifer Lawrence soooo much but I wouldn't go as far as to say her character was "mysterious". It was more like "annoying". I'm so sorry Jennifer!!! It's not your fault. Kudos on winning an Oscar though... you really are a great actress. Here's the trailor....

On the second day The Mister and I took off to The Dallas Aquarium. It was packed with kids galore... which kinda made it hard for us to enjoy everything but we toughed it out and saw some amazing fish. Not only were there fish but also a tons of exotic birds and little tinnie weenie Marmosets!

"Marmoset they'll be Days like This"

We also saw a lot of Sea Horses (which I love)... I could watch them float around all day. They are just the most beautiful creatures I think I've ever seen. Here's some Instagrams:

Here is a type of Toucan. They were able to fly free so you could literally walk right up to them.

Here is a GIANT crab. I feel so bad now that I love crab legs. After seeing these guys I don't think I'll be going to Red Lobster anytime soon. They were so peaceful.

Aren't sea horses just magical? There were so many different types. Here's just a few. I actually got to see two sea horse's mating. Did you know that male sea horses not only carry the eggs but also deliver the baby sea horses?

Check out these guys!! Do you see their little snouts and eyes?

There are two different varieties of sea horses here. They both resemble sea kelp.

After the Aquarium The Mister and I took a horse and buggy tour of The West End Historic District where we trotted through Dealey Plaza where John F. Kennedy was assassinated. We past by the Grassy Knoll and the Texas School Book Depository Building which was surprisingly small! Actually the whole stretch of Elm Street, Main Street and Commerce Street was way smaller than what the videos and pictures make it out to be. My Dad would be so proud of me. I snapped pictures of it all but there was so much construction going on at the time. It was a very good weekend full of friends, great food and good drinks. I can't wait to go back to see the Dallas Museum of Art and The Dallas Zoo! This time we will be going during the work week so it won't be so crowded.

Chain Collar DIY

Hey guys! I have another awesome DIY... this time it's brought to you by my very lovely and talented friend Lesley  Forrester. I met Lesley in College.... we both attended a small Art and Design school in Columbus, Ohio and ran around in similar crowds. I saw this DIY on Lesley's Instagram and almost fell out of my chair. (by the way her Instagram images are tre' cool) I contacted her right away and asked to borrow her idea for my very own bloggy. Did I mention Lesley is gorgeous?

So the directions are pretty basic. Lesley used her boyfriends shirt and cut out the collar leaving the button on the front part. You can use any collared shirt you can find.... your local thrift store would be a good bet. You might even be able to find other kinds and styles of collars.

So after the collar have been cut... next you want to take whatever type of chain you would like
(small, fat, gold or silver) and sew it to the rim or edge of the collar with the same collar thread as the shirt.
Or you can get crazy and use a contrasting thread color. Feel free to be creative. A plaid collar would look adorable with a little delicate string of pearls attached to the rim. You can get chain at your local craft store.

I love how Lesley has layered a necklace underneath. Checkout "How to Layer necklaces like a Pro".
Lesley is not only a crafty chic but the girl also has a knack for makeup. Check her out on
LesleyKat NYC's channel to get a glimpse of her awesome tutorials!

Can't get enough Lesley? Check out Lesleykat On The Cusp on Tumblr.

I want to give a special thanks to Lesley for letting me borrow her DIY and images .... this post would not be as beautiful without her pretty face!!! Who knows maybe we will see Lesley featured here again in the future..... wink wink.

Penny Loafers!

I'm so obsessed with Penny Loafers right now. I really, really want a pair but can never find a decent pair at any local Thrift stores.... looks like I'm going to have to shell out the money and buy a brand new pair and break them in myself.

I just love how classic and timeless they are. My Mom used to wear them all the time.... her and Dad. My Mom said it was the style to wear them without socks. She claims that she would get dressed in the morning and wear loafers with knee socks on her walk to school and take them off as soon as she got to school.  I'm guessing she did it in part because my Grandma (her Mom) wouldn't have her going without them and or it was cold on the morning trek.

It's so funny how style repeats itself.

Look at these Bettie's in saddle shoes and loafers.

I think it's so beautiful and romantic in a way when I see young ladies ridding in bikes in skirts. It's so feminine and the loafers give it an added prep school touch.

Yes, they really put pennies in them!

Anyone would give you a "double take" in this cute, fresh little outfit.

I must run out and get a pair before this Spring! I can't wait to wear them with little white socks and shorts. I think I'm going to bring the school girl prep look back into my wardrobe. These will be the perfect first addition to my collection!

Kate's kittah kat-toe DIY

Happy Friday everyone! I just found the cutest kittah DIY ever on Kittenhood. Kate from Scathingly Brilliant has done it again. I just adore her blog and all her little outfits. She has the most clever DIY's out there and always has fun posts. She is the creator and owner of Flapper Doodle ....1920's inspired art and stationary shop. I was saddened to hear that her cat Hypatia has just recently passed last week. For anyone that is an animal lover who has lost a dear pet knows how hard life can be without their furry loved ones there to greet them everyday when they get home from work and to wake up to them in the morning. They are members of the family... our children, they are always there for us when we need them and never judge.
My heart goes out to Kate during this very difficult time.

On a happier note..... I wanted to share Kate's cat-toe shoe DIY to brighten your day because she is such a sunny, bright type of gal.

I don't own a cat but love the cat-toe trend and I'm totally going to hop on board with this one. I'm on the prowl for plain flats as we speak. I'm so excited how easy and lovely these seem to come out. I can see a future "craft night" with the girls.

This is just a smidge of the awesome DIY's that Kate has. Here are my favorites... enjoy.

Make sure to check out Kate's blog Scathingly Brilliant and also her Etsy store Flapper Doodle.

I am just loving the new Ferris Wheel and Aquamaids line by Shabby Apple! I'm a vintagey type of girl at heart and find that these classic styles are flattering on all shapes and sizes. I simply adore the colors and patterns! The skirts are just amazing. Every one knows I love my skirts..... I practically live in them.

Check out the classic hair paired with red lips and nails! Very 50's retro. I also love the big bouffant hair styles.... I can never quite get my hair to do that. I do think the classic beehive should come back, but that's more 60's.

Oh! I just love Peplum tops! I recently purchased my first and they are so flattering! I'm obsessed with bright colors and am really into this whole line. The clothes are so happy and sunny.

These are the most adorable little Peter Pan collars.  In the last 2 months I have stocked up on scarves and hair ties! I find it hard to wear them to work but can't wait to rock them this summer at Barton Springs and at Mustang Island!

Speaking of Mustang Island.... I'm dying for one of these swim suits. I'm a big fan of the retro suits and have yet to purchase one. I wouldn't have to worry about "popping out" in these high cut styles.

Ok, where can I get one of those fun, flowery swim caps?

I'm also a little shy when it comes to bikini's. I want to feel comfortable and not have to worry about "adjusting" anything. These suits are perfect for me.

This rediculously large swan floaty is the best. I can see Mandy and I at Barton Springs floating around with over sized sunglasses on. Ahhhhh, that's the life!

Right now Shabby Apple has a Take Two Promotion. Buy any item from The Ferris Wheel  Collection and recieve any item here for 50% off! Happy shopping!

Our little fun filled weekend...

This past weekend was packed full! It was fun but a little over whelming..... I ended up having the work Saturday (which was a bummer) and then had to run straight to a baby shower for my good friends Jodi and David Hopper. Jodi and I share a booth during First Thursday's. She is the creator and owner of Art Genius. She is also a member of Craft Riot and sells her jewelry at Parts & Labour too! They are expecting their first child... a baby boy any day now. I'm so lucky to have such wonderful and talented friends! We had such a great time with them and all their friends. It wasn't your "typical" baby shower. Afterwards we stayed and helped them pack up and then decided to all grab a bite to eat. We ended up at this Modern Thai Cuisine eatery called "Spin". Jodi had read that it was given a 9 out of 10 in Austin360.com. Turns out that Ek Timrerk and Thai Changthong both veterans of Uchi, Uchiko and East Side King teamed up together to  combine their culinary skills creating a new "Spin on Thai". We stared with Sweet Corn Taro Tempura which consisted of crispy fried taro and corn fritter in a sweet chili vinaigrette, topped with green onions and crushed toasted peanuts. I also had Quail for the first time! It was really good, tiny little thing but tastey.... marinated in lemon grass and rosemary. We all each took a little bite. We all gobbled that up right away.... onto the tasting plates and full plates.
I ordered the Salmon Tataki from the tasting menu. It is a smoked salmon, lightly and tossed with garlic, shallot, brunoise pinapple, tobiko, and green apple chili sauce. It was quite spicy but I was feeling adventurous that night. It was very delicious and tender just the way salmon should be... lightly seared and almost falling apart. The Mister ordered Saba Mi Krop, smoked Norweigian Mackerel which is chargrilled and topped with pickle Serrano, ginger garlic paste and Thai chili and black soy over crispy egg noddles. It was very good however too spicy for me.

Sunday The Mister and I decided to venture out to Zilker park for The 85th Annual Kite Festival. It's held on the first Sunday in March every year. I had never been before and Matt said it was a site to see. It was indeed! There were kite's as far as the eye could see. We had also come prepaired with a picnic and a blanket. Luckily we were able to park at his office parking lot and it was a quick walk to the field. It was amazing... and it was actually quite warm and breezy that day. We had so much fun but tired qwickly and headed home after a few hours... but we managed to take some nice photo's while we were there.

A really scary, rickety bridge we had to cross.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend as well!!

Oh Marcia...

Happy Friday everyone! I remember the good old days watching TV Land after school and catching The Brady Bunch. I was a HUGE fan of The Brady Bunch... never really took to The Partridge Family. I always loved Marcia Brady.... she was the best. She was the original "Bitch". She was always saying mean shit to Jan and was a total

I loved when they showed episodes with the girls bedroom. I always wanted to catch a glimpse of that Pepto Bismol colored wall and the ruffly pillow tops. It was like getting a glimpse into the world of a young pre-teen girl, which I was not even close to being yet. I loved how she brushed her hair in front of her vanity.

98...99...100.

Ooh! My nose!
Random fact: The Brady's sliding glass door never had glass in it.
Apparently it caused too many glare issues, so there was always just an empty sliding frame.

This is the best episode ever! Marcia gets nailed in the nose with a football!

The original Regina George.

Watch Marcia's style go from disco to rock & roller.

Poor jan... always getting mentally abused by Marcia.

Marcia: Hello Jenny, this is Marcia. I called about the slumber party I'm having tomorrow night.

Jenny: I can hardly wait.
Marcia: Well, it's only for my friends.
Jenny: Sure, I'm your friend Marcia.
Marcia: Not anymore. So considered yourself uninvited! [Marcia hangs up the phone]

"Something suddenly came up."

Marcia Brady was the President of the "Davy Jones Fan Club".

Bitch face.

No this is the Marcia Brady's style that I remember as a child.

"From now on, I'm beautiful and noble; I'm Juliet!" - Marcia

"It's so beneficial for me to be away from those children in junior high and to be with people of my own mature growth. I'm looking forward to the intellectual stimulation. Nice meeting you boys. Bye."
-Marcia

Random fact:
Despite many scenes taking place in the bathroom, there was never a toilet on screen. Standards and Practices wouldn't allow it.

Interesting fact:

The only references to the boys' mother and the girls' father in the entire five-year run of the series occur briefly in the pilot (and first episode), "The Honeymoon." A single scene with Mike and Bobby suggests quite strongly that Mrs. Brady died, though neither character explicitly says so. A later scene with Mike and Carol only offers the vague suggestion of some previous trauma before Carol's marriage to Mike. She never refers directly to her former husband. To read the entire relevant dialogue from both scenes described above, visit the encyclopedia entries for Mrs. Brady and Mr. Martin. The characters' full names were never revealed.

Seriously, that's the title of this episode.

Life lately......

Life has been very fruitful lately.... I must say indeed. The Mister and I have spent the last two weekends working very hard to get our home and yard into shape. I haven't worked this hard since we made the initial move over 4 years ago! I have scrubbed, sanded, painted and dusted, vacuumed and planted non stop. I'm tired and sore but it feels great! Matt has been working over time to complete our screened in porch... which is coming along amazingly! I can't wait till it's finished and we have patio furniture out there to perch on. I in vision many summer nights spent relaxing with the Hub's and Lucy.We also decided a few months ago that we wanted to re-vamp the interior of our home and simplify it and go with a Mid Century look. We both adore Mid Century design and furniture etc.....I was really inspired by this past months Atomic Ranch issue. I'll admit, our home is usually full of clutter. I like to call it "creative clutter".... full of toys and trinkets that we've picked up along the way, yarn and Lego sets. You know... the usual. I have packed and stored away all our toys , deciding to focus on key pieces. I have a kick ass camera collection just waiting to be put on display. More on that to come!!

So Matt and I went to The Home Depot and picked up some interior paint. I wanted to paint an accent wall in our bedroom to draw attention to some wood wall art that I am going to be making! I was totally inspired by one of my all time favorite blogs.... Oh so Lovely Vintage. They have the best tips on how to redecorate vintage. Check out the wooden wall art that I'm planning on making! So i painted the accent wall behind our birch colored head board.... it looks pretty amazing I must say. I love vibrant colors. I liked it so much that I painted our downstairs half bath the same color. It's called Go Go Lime! Matt scored some awesome sputnik lights for our home too. They are gently used from a neighbor that is re decorating!

We also finished up planting our fabulous garden as well. We planted squash, zucchini, cucumbers, green beans, corn and tomatoes. I have my own little herb garden as well. Tending to our garden brings us so much joy. I love watching our little seedlings grow, it gives us such pride.

There is even BIGGER news! Matt and I decided to go ahead and buy some chicks! We have been talking about it for at least 2 years now and have been putting it off. We finally went to Callahan's and bought two Java chicks... they are so cute. We had a little tragedy on the second night. One of the chicks (Olive) died. It was sad but it happens a lot with these lil' guys. Matt buried her in our backyard. That makes 3 dead birds in our pet cemetery. The other Java chick (Penelope) is doing just great. Mandy and I went back to Callahan's the next day and bought 2 more baby chicks to keep Penelope happy and warm at night. We bought a different breed which is supposed to be "exotic". Mandy and I are still trying to figure out the name of the breed. Lol, we happened to walk in Callahan's right before they closed and picked out two lil' guys based on their coloring and egg type/color. We rushed out only to find out we couldn't remember what kind they were when Matt asked us. The are brown little beauties that lay dark eggs. It's amazing how different the breeds are in weight, body build and coloring. The 2nd kind we got.... which I will figure out here soon are so chubby and heavy in your hand compared to Penelope which is a Java. They are just adorable and are doing very well. More pictures to come! Here's a little teaser....

Besides working hard on the house and the garden I've also been crocheting quite a lot lately. I am going to be attending First Thursday again coming up here in April and need to get my stock built up... not to mention I'm still making animal heads for Parts & Labour and SXSW is keeping them busy! Whew... I've been a busy bee lately. I've been trying to get my online business up and cracking. You can find my store here on Big Cartel. I've been crocheting animal heads, hair bows, cupcakes and much much more! I also started a new store for my gently used clothing and accessories... which is still in the works. There isn't any images uploaded yet. You can shop my closet here at The Pigeon Post.

Health wise I've had some issues. I was torn on wether or not to share this information on my blog and talked to Mandy about it and she thought it was a good idea to mention it and just "get it out there". This weekend I'm having surgery on my lady parts once again! The procedure's are called Laparoscopy and Hystroscopy. Basically my Uterus is not a very friendly place... I have had this procedure done about 3 years ago to remove a grape sized polyp from the lining of my uterus and when they got in there they saw that I also had scar tissue built up from Endometriosis and burned all that out as well. It was painful and emotionally draining on both Matt and I. I knew that the disorder could come back but I didn't think it would be so soon. See, The Mister and I have had issue's conceiving. We've been through the tests and all the hormone shots and even went as far as to have IVI performed with no such luck. It was rough on us and our marriage so we decided together that we would be fine being a "childless couple", which interestingly is harder for other people to understand than it is for us to accept. We always get bone head comments from people about how their distant cousin or a friend of a friend was told that "She couldn't Conceive" and then when she was least expecting it she got pregnant. Wow! Great story, but that's not making me feel better and "those people" are the exception.... not us. I really have to hold myself back from hurting people when they say things like that.... I know they think they are comforting me and giving me a sense of hope but it's false hope. Matt and I have come to terms with it and are closer now as a couple than we have ever been. So this surgery is just another reminder of how my "junk" doesn't work. Nice.

It is a day surgery and I will be in and and out with no concept of time. The hard part is recovering and I'm starting to remember how bad it was. I was however going to get a Hysterectomy but last minute Matt and I decided to wait. I'm really just prolonging the inevitable but people say "I'm too young".... whatever does that mean.... too young for what? I'm not able to have children and my plumbing doesn't work, just get rid of it right? But for some reason the thought of me parting with my beloved uterus frightened me. So it's here to stay until it pisses me off and I decide the time is right. I know this is a heavy story.... it goes way back. I tried to explain it in a nutshell.

On a happier note.... I have hardly had an seizures or severe migraines recently. I, without doctors concent (I don't recommend anyone doing what I did without talking to their Doctor first) decided to take my health into my own hands and slowly tapper myself off Lamictal. Lamictal is a common drug used to treat Epilepsy. Since being diagnosed over two years ago with Alice in Wonderland Syndrome life has been less than. I have been on loads of different types of medication in order to prevent seizures and other symptoms that come with Todd's Syndrome. I have suffered the most severe side effects and have watched my body slowly change from a healthy weight with an active lifestyle to a squishy, dowey inactive body. The side effects make it nearly impossible to be active the way I used to be. My appetite and metabolism have changed as well as my libido. It's not that I'm lazy, I want to do hike, swim, play and run around. I recently came to the conclusion that I may not actually have Epilepsy... that I just have a bunch of symptoms that make up a syndrome (which is what a syndrome really is). I DO think that I have real seizures, however I think that through meditation and other methods other than drugs I can learn to control my stress which seems to cause the migraines and seizures. I have successfully weened myself off all my medication and am jogging and meditating like a pro. I haven't shared this news with anyone beside Taryn (sister) and Matt. I want to wait a little while and then present the news to my Neurologist that I'm sure will be less than thrilled. I feel that if I learn to control my stress by staying active, eating right, getting good sleep and meditating that everything else in life will fall into place.

Whew! Well this has been a long post. I hope you guys are digging our new Mid Century vibe we have going on in our home...there will be more pictures to come.... including the Garden and chickadees!

Look familiar? Most likely you recognise this home and pavillion, made famous by the film, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, was designed by architect David Haid (1929-1993) in 1974. Haid was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1929. He moved to Chicago in 1951 to study architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology under Mies van der Rohe and James Speyer. That same year, Haid began working in van der Rohe's design office and remained there till 1960. In 1963 he founded David Haid& Associates. The minimalist influence of both van der Rohe and Speyer can be seen in Haid's work throughout the Chicago and Houston, TX areas. Haid passed away in 1993 at the age of 64.

benrose15

The Rose property, currently listed for $1,650,00, includes the home and pavilion and features 4 bedrooms and 4 baths totaling 5300 sqft. The steel and glass buildings are cantilevered over a ravine on a 1 acre lot.

benrose10

Ben Rose (1916-2004) was a painter and textile designer born in Indiana in 1916. He studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1939-1941. In 1946 he set up Ben Rose Inc., which specialized in hand screen-printed textiles and wallpaper. With the aid of his wife Frances and interior designer Helen Stern, Ben's business grew and by 1967 he had about fifty employees. His textiles were a favorite among architects and designers and were showcased around the world. Besides being an artist, Ben was an avid car collector which led to the building of the now famous auto-pavilion in 1974.

American architect A. James Speyer (1913-1986) was born in Pittsburgh. He graduated with a degree in Architecture from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1934. He continued his studies under Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, where he received his masters degree in 1939. After serving in WWII he returned to IIT where he taught architecture under Mies. He established his own firm in 1946, completing homes in the Chicago and Pittsburgh areas. Speyer's minimalist architectural style was heavily influenced by van der Rohe and featured rectangular structures constructed with exposed steel beams, brick and glass. The Ben Rose house designed by Speyer in 1952, is considered one of his finest architectural works.

You guys all remember the famous scene....

The car parked to the left of the Ferrari in the garage is also an MG, in this case an MG J2.

The 1961 Ferrari GT250 was a modified MG sports car. The producers received several angry letters from car enthusiasts who believed the car shown was a *real* Ferrari and that it was actually wrecked in the film.

When the Ferrari crashed, the fiberglass hood ripped, but branches were put over the rip to make sure the camera didn't record it. More trivia here.

I am just loving Mid Century Architecture and have never been more tuned into it than I am now... my
Dad would be so proud!

Every time I'm at a Thrift store I make sure I look in the "house ware" section. I'm always on the hunt for interesting dishes, cups, etc..... I scored a few vintage plates once which we use on a regular basis. I found some awesome examples of mugs that I would love to have in my collection.

I'm loving this flowery set. It reminds me of some mugs that my parents used to own. The had some sort of flower design and owls on them. I miss those mugs. I think I remember seeing that Taryn (my sister) had them at one point. I'm just glad they are being utilized still.....
Nothing like a nice hot cup of hot chocolate on a cold, rainy day.
These little Umbrella designs would cheer anyone up!

Wanty!

I love this color scheme and the floral design on the inside of the cup, making a happy little surprise.

Oh! These are so girly.... I just love them.

Large and graphic.

These kinda remind me of out dated mugs that an old hotel would have. I do like them though.

I love this 70's goodness!!!

I love the way these stack.

I think these are my absolute favorites! I would love to nab these and have The Mister make them into tea cup candles. That's right....my husband makes candles.

I swear I had a mug like this in collage.

An apple a day......

I'm really into this vintage vibe lately. I have some really cool posts coming up here that are all inspired buy the 50'and 60's.... some 70's but mostly Mid Century. I have a new blog series coming out called
"Starlets and Harlots"..... I also have a bunch of posts about Mid Century design. I think you all will enjoy it. It's in part by the fact that The Mister and I are re decorating our home and we are going for the "retro" modern feel. There will be pictures to come....

Starlets and Harlots

Welcome to my very first post on a new series called "Starlets and Harlots". Our first Starlet is the very blonde and beautiful Barbara Bouchet. Barbara was born Barbara Goutscher on August 15th, 1943 in Reichenburg, Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia.  Her family was forced to leave the country when Barbara was a little girl and settled in San Francisco, Califoria. Bouchet attended Galileo High School. In 1959, Bouchet won the "Miss Gidget" beauty contest which was held by the local television station KPIX-TV.

Barbara was featured as a dancer on the teen-targeted rock'n'roll TV show, The KPIX Dance Party, from 1959 to 1962. Bouchet began her official acting career as a model on magazine covers and an actress in TV commercials. She made her film debut with an uncredited bit part in the comedy What a Way to Go! (1964).

Bouchet soon became known for openly flaunting her spectacularly curvaceous figure in several pictures: clad in alluring silk harem robes in John Goldfarb, Please Come Home! (1965), cavorting nude on the beaches of Pearl Harbor in the World War II epic In Harm's Way (1965), and wearing a bikini for the bulk of her screen time in Agent for H.A.R.M. (1966). She also portrayed "Ursula" in Bob Fosse's outstanding musical Sweet Charity (1969), made for a nicely sultry "Miss Moneypenny" in the tongue-in-cheek 007 outing Casino Royale (1967), and had guest spots on such TV series as "The Virginian" (1962), "Star Trek" (1966), "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1964) and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (1964).

In 1970, Bouchet became fed-up with being typecast as mindless sexpots in Hollywood fare and moved to Italy. She soon became one of Italy's top actresses, carving out a fruitful niche for herself in sex comedies, giallo murder mysteries and gritty police crime thrillers. Among her most memorable roles in these Italian features are the brazen spoiled rich lady "Patrizia" in Lucio Fulci's disturbing Don't Torture a Duckling (1972) ("Don't Torture A Duckling"), prostitute "Francine" in The French Sex Murders (1972) ("The French Sex Murders"), modeling agency choreographer "Kitty" in The Lady in Red Kills Seven Times (1972) ("Red Queen Kills 7 Times"), saucy love interest "Scilla" in the splendidly sleazy Ricco (1973), and enticing stripper "Anny" in Death Rage (1976) ("Death Rage").

Bouchet had an unforgettably steamy lesbian love scene with Rosalba Neri in Amuck (1972) ("Amuck") and appeared alongside fellow Bond girls Barbara Bach and Claudine Auger in Black Belly of the Tarantula (1971) ("The Black Belly of the Tarantula").

Barbara married producer Luigi Borghese in 1976. In 1983, at age 40, Bouchet did a nude pictorial for the Italian edition of "Penthouse" magazine. Bouchet started her own production company in 1985 and launched her own line of fitness books and videos. She also opened her own health club in Rome. Barbara most recently popped up in a small role (as fellow giallo star David Hemmings' wife) in Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York (2002). Bouchet speaks English, German and Italian with equal fluency. Barbara Bouchet continues to act in both films and TV shows, alike, made in Italy.

Interesting facts:

As a baby living in Reichenberg, Czechoslovakia, in the mountains north of Prague, she had to flee the communists, but eventually was reunited with her father Fritz, a war photographer. She had two younger brothers and two younger sisters who also slowly rejoined the family. Everyone migrated to California, U.S.A. in December 1956.

A picture taken by her photographer father was submitted to a beauty contest. She won as "Miss Gidget" and the winnings included a date with "Gidget" movie star James Darren and a screen test. The screen test never panned out, but it did lead to teen modeling work. Her extensive modeling career led to 35 magazine covers.

Personal quote:
"Being a Hollywood beauty was a mixed blessing. Men are men, with all that testosterone, and when a pretty girl comes in front of them what can you expect?"

Bits of randomness

It feels like I haven't posted in quite awhile..... I honestly haven't felt like doing much of anything lately. I've been working hard with The Mister on getting the house into shape. It looks really good. The screened in porch that Matt has built is almost complete. We can actually sit outside and enjoy the lovely Austin weather  and it makes me feel much safer about letting Lucy out.

Our baby chicks are growing up fast. We had another tragic death at The Hart household....but these things happen. We originally started with Penelope (yellow) and Olive both Java's. Olive didn't make it....I think she was sick when we got here. Mandy and I went back to Callahan's to get two more. We bought Betty (brown) and Mabel. Mabel didn't make it either. I decided that that we weren't going to get anymore chicks and that we would just keep Penelope and Betty and if they passed then we wouldn't have chickens.....it's sad to see these little guys go. So right now Mabel and Penny are growing like weeds and we will eventually move them outside to a chicken coop but for now they still sleep in a tissue box.

Here's our new Sputnik Lights that Matt purchased from a neighbor! I'm so excited. He is going to cover up the can lights and re wire the electric so that this can hang above our dinner table. We have another that will hang in the stair well. It's gonna look sooooo good!

Everything is already blooming around the house. We live by a field full of wild flowers. They haven't all popped up yet but these were the first ones that I saw near our fence. It is so magical to see all the different types of variety. Last year I took many outfit posts in those fields. I haven't really felt like getting dressed up much lately.... hence no daily wear posts. I haven't been feeling like myself at all. I also made a drastic decision and cut off 9 inches of hair. It's cute but I'm still in shock. My hair was like my security blanket....now I feel all exposed. There will be pictures to come.

I've been trying to run a mile a day....I started off just fine but slowly it tapered off when Matt and I started to do more work on the house. We actually just joined a new fitness center called CG Arena. I found out about it through my friend Dominique... we had went to a boot camp together and it kicked my ass! I was sore for 3 days. Matt and I went there to check it out and it looked like so much fun. Matt's first boot camp is today....I had to opt out so I can finish staining my plaques for my animal heads. I have a deadline for First Thursday.

I cleared out all the clutter and toys that we had on display in our house and have simplified everything. We are concentrating on my camera collection. Here's a little sneak peek. I'm still not sure if I should put away the embroidery or not.

Here's some little ears that I've been working on. They are too cute. I have bear ears and foxy ears....soon to make more. Hope they sell well!

These are some of the animal heads that I've been busting my butt to crochet. I've been crocheting non stop and quite frankly am sick of it. I miss when I used to crochet for pleasure. Sometimes I don't know if I what I do is worth all of the fuss. I get really stressed out when people ask for special requests...... seriously stressed. I don't know why but I do. It's hard for me to say no to people and I worry that they won't like the end product. I've had a few horrible things happen to me in the past when people have asked for special requests.... I just don't ever want to go through that again. I honestly don't know if I make that much money off these gigs that I do either. It's fun and I meet new people but is it really worth it? These are just some thoughts that I've been kicking around for quite along time. Downer.....

Tomorrow's First Thursday and I hope there is a good turn out. It's been raining cat's and dog's so we shall see. Mandy will be selling her totes and zipper pouch's. We will be taking tons of photo's as it's Mandy's first time selling at First Thursday. I'm in better spirit's today.... I wrote that bit up above yesterday. I feel better now. In fact I feel so much better that I have applied to be in Austin Flea! That about wraps it up.

taking the plunge.....

It's early April and the flowers are all in bloom! Everywhere you look there are bluebonnets and black eyed susans all over our neighborhood and along the highways. Wild flowers as far as the eye can see. I truly love this time of year and I'm especially loving this dress I bought. I was looking for a simple cotton dress to wear to First Thursday (which was a bust) with Mandy and found the last one at Target! Thank God I could still fit into a small..... usually I can't these days. That is all going to change here soon in the near future.

As I said in the previous post that The Mister and I had joined a Boot Camp. I had went with my good friend Dominique to try a class and loved it so Matt and I went to the Gym to check it out and signed up. We have since yet to go.... I totally caught the sniffles immediately after we signed up and can't seem to shake it. I'm hoping that by this Monday (today) that I can start to get back into the workout mindset. The class I took with Dominique kicked my ass so hard I was sore for three days afterwards! I'm looking forward to getting back into shape and feeling good about myself again, which is something I haven't felt in a very long time.

So as promised I have (Matt has) taken photos of my new hair cut. About two weeks ago I had "taken the plunge" so to speak and lopped off over 9 inches of hair! It was kind of a sudden decision. Lately I have been going through a lot of changes.... changes in myself and changes in relationships with others. I have started to really reflect on life and what makes me happy and Matt happy as a couple. I don't want to get into too many personal details out of respect for the privacy of our relationship.... but like any married couple we have struggled through some hard times and have come out stronger because of it. Mostly, I have been dealing with internal struggles.... Trying to figure out how to be a "balanced, happy individual" is sometimes hard for me.

I talked a little bit before about getting off all my medication (Lamictal) for Epilepsy, which is still going good but with that comes other side effects. Lamictal is also used to treat Bipolar Disorder (which I don't have) so when I weened myself off of it I started to feel really emotional and angry. I tried to deal with it naturally with a healthy diet and exercise and even meditation.... but It just wasn't working out. Matt and I recognised that and I immediately saw my Doctor and am currently on a form of anti depressant. I don't know if I can ever fully be completely off of all medication.... I will have to wait and see. I'm feeling more like myself lately and am slowly getting over the initial shock of cutting off most of my hair. My hair was my security blanket and now I feel a little naked... but maybe that's a good thing.

I kind of had to learn to take a "step back" from life and take a social vacation.... for the sake of my mental health and for the sake of my friendships and Matt's and our relationship. I have learned a lot about myself over the past Month or so and will continue to learn more and develop as a person. I look forward to positive changes in me and will continue to accept change instead of fighting it. I think for me the hardest part is loving myself and accepting and forgiving myself. I'm thankful that I have the most supportive husband and wonderful family and friends that are always there for me.

The making of a very Grumpy Cat....

Everyone loves "The Grumpy Cat"....who doesn't? Who wouldn't love a Grumpy Cat Crochet Head mounted on their wall? I know I would! Good thing I make them!

I recently jumped on the "Grumpy Cat" bandwagon and crocheted a little Grumpy Cat head. It actually turned out really cute. How can you not love a face like that? For those of you that are curious about my Crochetedermy, here are some images to demonstrate how I make my patterns and heads.
I started making my own patterns a few years ago.... I am self taught. I started with a basic beginners crochet book.... I then graduated to Amigurumi (soft, crochet toys) and then started from there developing my own little plushies. Every Animal Head I make is all single crochet (sc) for those of you that read patterns. It's really quite simple if you know how to make the Magic Ring.... basically that means you are working in rounds.

I basically just increase the stitches to get the desired size. I really don't write my patterns down
(it's all in my head).... that's all gonna start to change here in the near future. I've been kicking around the idea of writing my patterns down to eventually have them published. It's a lot of work and documentation in order to submit your idea to a publishing company (I have done my research). It will be a slow process and a really HUGE goal, but it is something that would be amazing for me to achieve.... so we shall see.
Grumpy Cat is starting to develop more here.... I have made his head and eyes circles and muzzle, now I have to stitch on his pink nose and frowny face. You can get plastic eyes at most craft stores in the "doll" section. I order mine in bulk now because I go through so many. I even buy plastic noses for my other little guys.

I place the plastic eyes in first and secure them.... after that I place the muzzle (mouth) a little underneath the eye circles so that the eye circles overlap the (muzzle) mouth. I can usually manipulate the yarn a little to get the desired shape I'm looking for...in this case I manipulated his eye circles a tad while stitching them to keep him looking grumpy.
Next I make the ears...yup, you got it! All made with the magic circle. I finish them off and whip stitch the to the head.

I'm pretty much finished at this point.... there is still more work to be done though. I have to stuff the head with polyfil and then place a small piece of wood in the tiny opening and crochet around the closing. I do this because when I mount the head onto a plaque I have to drill through the back of the plaque into the wooden piece I have sewn into the actual head. Not very glamorous I know...it's all part of the process. I typically buy my plaques or mounts at Hobby Lobby, I sand and stain them at home. Actually, my fabulous husband Matt usually cuts all the wooden pieces and sands and stains my plaques for me. He is so good about helping out! After the head is drilled into place on the plaque Matt puts a hook on the back to make it ready to be hung. Voila!

That's about the whole step by step process. I will make sure to snap a picture of the Grumpy Cat mounted on my wall. I know I didn't post the "actual" pattern here online just because I would like to keep my pattern my own (in my head). With that being said, please respect that I work hard to create these heads and wouldn't like to see my Grumpy Cat crochet head everywhere. Thank you so much!

xoxo

Spring time is the right time....for gardening

It's hard to believe that it's almost mid April already! The weather is getting warmer and our backyard garden is taking off! Matt and I love our backyard, especially our garden....that's where we spend most of our time. We like to plant veggies and watch as they grow! We are also very good at it...well Matt is. He is the green thumb in the family. I actually helped a bunch this year, I got out there along with him and got dirty.  We started planting our garden late February.... we had a bit of a frost and lost some green bean sprouts but it actually worked out. Matt had to go back and re-plant the summer squash and zucchini. It's growing very well I must say.

These aren't the most beautiful pictures in the world but it gives you an idea of what we are working with. Our backyard and Garden are fairly large so it takes awhile to get everything into shape. Matt had been tilling the yard weeks ahead of time to prepare that dirt. He finally splurged and bought an electric tiller instead of using a ho like he had been in the past. It is back breaking and brutal. Seriously.

We actually bought tomato plants this year.... we do have some that we grew ourselves out on the porch ready to be transplanted but they thought "what the heck". I love cherry tomatos the best. There's nothing I find sweeter than walking out into your garden and picking your own fresh cherry tomato's and popping them into your mouth. Straight from the vine. I love the smell and love the taste. It's truly the best. The same goes for green beans.

This year for "row markers" we decided to use some of Matt's many fossils. He literally has tons! He is such a collector. I don't know how he finds them so fast.... he really has a hawk eye. There are shoe boxes full of them stored away in our house and some that we have on display. He is so cute... he can tell you facts about every single one of them.

Here is a before picture. We planted two rows of corn on the far right hand side, followed by four rows of green beans along with zucchini, summer squash, tomato's and my favorite.... my herbs!
Just some of the wild life that you will find in our back yard. I love grass hoppers! I always giggle when they bounce around. Now that the chicken's are growing Matt is working on building the coop. These little grass hopper's are going to be a tastey treat for them!

Flash forward to mid April.... here are some zucchini sprouts! As you can see the ground is in need of a good watering. It's been raining like cats & dogs here recently but the dirt just sucks it all up!

Here's my glorious herb garden on the left side. I have parsley, cilantro, sage, mint, thyme and basil! I'm so excited... this is the biggest herb garden I've had yet. I love that I can just walk out the back door and clip fresh herbs for cooking. I have two different types of mint. I have chocolate and orange.... and they smell surprisingly just like that!  I use a ton of basil and cilantro in the summer and have recently started putting mint on a ton of stuff. It's soooo refreshing.

Look at our little baby corn stalks! Aren't they so cute? Hopefully this year they will actually produce an ear of corn. Last year we got one little baby corn. It was cute but not edable.

Beans beans and more beans!

One of my favorites! Dill. Some people can't stand dill. I guess you either love it or hate it. Same goes for Cilantro. I've heard people tell me that it tastes like soap to them.

Check out our crazy Bamboo! Matt bought this tiny bamboo plant online. It's been over a year now and it finally just starting to get bamboo shoots. I didn't even know this is how it started to grow. Lol

Once again....my lovely herbs. Check out the Sage on the bottom next to the Parsley.

My little Gardening helper Lucy! She loves to soak up the sun.... she will just sit in the Garden and lay there while we dig around in the dirt. She is really good about not eating the plants and not scratching around. She loves to eat fresh green beans straight off the bush just like me. Like mother like daughter I suppose.

That's it for my first garden post of the new year! There will be more to come and hopefully the pictures will be more lush. It doesn't stay that green here in Austin. What veggies are you growing in your garden this year? Any herbs?

xoxo

Happy Monday! The weather has been so lovely the past few days. The Mister and I survived our first official week of boot camp. Yippee! We were so sore...it was painful yet hilarious now that I'm not sore any longer. I'm so excited that we are actually getting our act together and are "doing something." We have a week off until the next boot camp starts up. In the mean time I'm going to take full advantage of this fine weather and go jogging.
Speaking of jogging...I came across this beautiful field of wild flowers one afternoon while running at Mueller Park. They are so many flowers popping up everywhere in Austin that it's hard to to smile and feel happy. The Mister was nice enough to meet me at the park after work one day and snap a few pictures of me.

He has been working so hard on finishing up the final touches on our new screened in porch which he designed and built himself! I'm so proud of him and am such a lucky girl that I have such a "handyman." He is also starting on our chicken coop.... which is going to be awesome! I'm soooo ready to get the chicks out of the house! I love the little guys but they are growing so fast and don't smell so good.
Besides getting back into shape and being the momma to two baby chicks, I've also been working on myself. Not just physically but mentally as well. I've been taking the time to smell the flowers...if you know what I mean. I'm slowly learning to take a step back and really focus on what is important to me....and am also learning to not get so worked up over small things. It feels like a weight has been
lifted off my chest. Sigh of relief.
It's too bad that wild flowers don't last all that long. This is truly my favorite time of year in Austin. I wish it would never end.... but the temperature will slowly start creeping higher and higher and before we know it summer will be upon us. But for now I'm enjoying life and am soaking up the sun before it gets too hot!

There are so many new and exciting things ahead for the Mister and I this spring. I can't wait to watch the chicks turn into chickens. They are already in their "awkward phase" right now. They are shedding their baby fuzz and have started to get their adult feathers. They are bouncing around in their little cage and are testing out their wings. It's hilarious to watch. The other day the Matt and I took them outside for their first time on the grass. They loved it. More on that later.....

That's about all the news I have going on in my little corner of the world right now. I hope you enjoyed this weeks posts. I'm happy that I'm actually getting around to taking more pictures.

Happy hump day everyone! Friday April twelfth the chickadees had their first big adventure! They have been growing and growing like little weeds and we have been slowly introducing them to the outdoors and to Lucy. We make sure to hold them everyday and expose them to Lucy just so the are used to humans and dogs. At first they wanted to be held and now they are getting to the stage that they run away from you. They are getting so quick and are really hard to catch!

For the past week we have been letting them run around in our screened in porch. The weather has been very fine and they love the sun. They have been testing out their new wings and are hopping and fluttering all over the place. It's too funny! They are at the stage where they are loosing their fuzz and their adult feathers are poking through.... they are very awkward and very gawky.

Penelope is the yellow chick. She is a Mottled Java. Eventually she will loose her yellow fuzz and will become a beautiful speckled black and white hen. Betty is the dark brown one. She is a Dutch Leghorn and will grow into a lovely brown hen that lays white eggs. Look at Betty's tail feathers... she seems to be developing her feathers faster yet she has remained smaller than Penelope.

They pretty much always stick together. This was the first time we introduced them to grass. I think they really loved it. They were picking at the grass and trying to catch bugs. It was really cute. They were trying so hard to catch that last ray of sun in order to stay warm.

Lucy just loves the chicks. I wasn't sure at first how she was going to react to them because she is technically a "ratter" and her instinct is to attack these types of little creatures but she has been surprisingly gentle with them. I think she learned her lesson when Penelope took a dump on her nose. It pretty much traumatized Lucy.

So this coming weekend is going to be busy busy! Friday night I'm hosting my first Austin Craft Riot (ACR) event. We are having a potluck game night. Hopefully I don't get too nervous..... there are lots of members that I don't know and haven't spoken to yet. I'll try to put my big girl pants on and be the best host I can be.

Sunday I have to run a 5K! I'm actually not looking forward to it simply because I'm still not in the best of shape and am hella sore from Monday's workout. I thought I would be able to take a spinning class today but I'd better not make things worse. So this 5K is called The Diva Dash. I ran the same course 3 years ago (before I was diagnosed with Epilepsy) and made it through the whole course in good time. I think in a way this is me trying to prove to myself that I can still do it even though I've been out of commission so to speak for the past few years.

The Mister and I are still working on the house and trying to finish up things here and there before the game night this Friday. Eeeeeep! Matt finished painting the downstairs bathroom for me. I had painted two coats of Go Go Lime and had tried to make the edges as neat as I possibly could but botched a few areas. Matt went back and touched it up but I'm such a perfectionist and want to go back in again and make it even more crisp and clean. I totally don't have enough time before Friday....I'll just have to make due for now and hope nobody notices.

That's about all I have to report about for this coming week! Hopefully Matt can finish up the coop soon so we can get these little stinkers out of the house. It is starting to smell like a petting zoo inside. Ha!
